Team17 has today announced King of the Castle, a narrative-driven, streaming-led, PC multiplayer game set in a fictional fantasy kingdom, in development at London-based studio, Tributary Games. Storming the gates of PC in 2023, King of the Castle will allow players to use their Twitch account or web browser to take up the mantle of Monarch or one of their Council of Nobles hailing from the game’s five unique regions. Throughout each story, both the Monarch and Nobles will have to work together to navigate a tongue-in-cheek world of power, fantasy, and political intrigue as they reckon with the treacherous – and often hilarious – consequences of steering the fate of a potentially unstable empire.

King of the Castle game hosts will play as the ‘Monarch’ and work through a series of mini storylines full of unique challenges, many of which can have far reaching consequences. For the Nobles, words are weapons, and at the beginning of each game, players will be assigned a unique homeland and be able to voice their thoughts using Twitch chat to discuss those dilemmas faced by the crown; plan not-so-secret uprisings; or vote upon key decisions, whose impact and legitimacy will be determined by the Monarch.

King of the Castle Key Features

Samuel Partridge, development lead, Tributary Games, said:

"King of the Castle is not just a unique game breaking new ground in social storytelling, it's also our debut game as a studio, so we're utterly focused on getting it right. Team17 has an illustrious history of helping small teams to deliver games that reach a lofty standard of quality and polish without compromising on their core premise. That's immensely important to us, and it was clear from the outset that Team17 understood that and had the resources to help us focus on development and realise the game’s full potential."

Roger Carpenter, Head of Studios, Team17 Digital, said:

“We’re thrilled to be working with Tributary Games on King of the Castle. The game’s unique, social take on storytelling really appealed to us and we look forward to helping the team deliver players a one-of-a-kind multiplayer experience on PC in 2023.”
